We're still in that huge scholastics push! All of the students work must be completed by the end of Christmas break to be turned in. The submission count is higher than Mooney has ever seen. Last week we were at over 100 entries when our normal final count is around 75. Hopefully we will see more of our student's work in the show this year and maybe even in the national awards show in New York City.

This week our Art 3 students are finishing up their identity projects. These projects are all so diverse and interesting. Some are drawings of their faces or some are almost like social experiments. Above all they dive into the idea of identity. We are in a huge push for our first Art competition of the year, Scholastics Art and Writing. Our AP students are working hard to complete eight pieces for portfolios  as well as our Art 2 students are in finishing their charcoal drawings. We are determined to make this a great year for Scholastics!

This week's post is devoted to our fabulously talented Art two students! They are in the process of working with very large scale charcoal drawings of a foreshortened perspective. Charcoal can be very difficult to work with at times, and the detail required for these pieces is quite intense. Every single student is creating fantastic pictures. They truly all are very talented.

Hello Cardinal Mooney students and parents. This past week has both ended and started some very intense projects. Our Art one classes were tasked with creating something creepy out of clay. The projects are currently in the process of drying but we have one done to show you! Art 2 is working on very large scale charcoal drawings. None of these are finished but they are showing a lot of progress and skill. Lastly AP Art students are working very hard to finish some of their pieces before their second class critique this coming friday.

New projects are beginning and old ones are continuing to grow in our art classes. A senior and AP student Jordan Kelly is beginning a very large scale oil painting for her concentration. Art three students are still working on their identity projects. They are all progressing in very different and interesting ways. Because our art two students are so talented this year they have begun to work on large scale foreshortened charcoal drawings. Charcoal is tough to work with but these kids can do it. Lastly our art one students are beginning their work with clay.

Our Art one students have been moving further into their work with shading these past few weeks. They first shaded using graphite pencils, then expanded into the use of colored pencils and water colors. These projects will end this week but shading never leaves the Art one classroom! Art two is continuing their knowledge with shading as they work on distorted self portraits. The identity projects  continue on in Art three. It's interesting to see all of the students personalities come out in their art work.

This week our AP Art students experienced their very first formal critique. All of their completed portfolio work and work in progress was placed in the hallway to be analyzed and critiqued by the students. The feedback has turned out to be very helpful and has even helped expand meaning in their concentrations. Our AP students will be doing this between one and two times a month. Hearing feedback from different perspectives is both helpful to the artist and their classmates. These critiques help us to expand our minds and understand how to read art. Also a huge congratulations to all of our AP Art students for being on the 2015 senior homecoming court! A huge congratulations to Senior and AP student Faith Gwozdz for winning this years Homecoming Queen!

The fabulous art never ends here. Two of our AP Art students, Jordan Kelly and Faith Gwozdz, continue to explore their concentrations. Our Art 3 students are beginning their new projects, their identity projects. Sophomore and Art 2 student Matt Heithoff has used his print making project to create a self portrait of himself. The new year has brought out so many new and blossoming ideas. The art being created here at Mooney is unbelievable.

For the last few weeks our digital art class has been working with light painting. In this form of photography, a camera is set to open its shutter for thirty seconds while lights are moved around the space. The camera collects all of this light in each picture. The turnout for these photos this year was absolutely phenomenal. The creativity the students had came through very well.

The past week has been filled with excellent art work. Our Art 1 classes are working on expressing and idea or feeling through the use of lines. For example, the taste of a hot pepper or the sound of an alarm clock. Art 2 is working on print making. Each student was in charge of sketching and creating their own prints. The outcome has been wonderful! Art 3 and AP Art are continuing to work on their own personalized projects.

It's great to see the amazing things that our students are working on at home. The creativity and talent level here at Mooney is outstanding.

As the year comes to a close......

Hello Cardinals! Well we made it! The year is finally winding down. As we prepare for finals and start to get excited about what summer will bring, it's a great time for reflection. It's great to look back at the work we've done this year- how we've grown as artists and the new skills that we developed. It'll be exciting to see what the next school year will bring!
