Midterms Are Finished!

All of the art students have successfully finished their midterms! For the Art 2 and 3 students they had to do still-lifes. The Art 3 students drew bones and the Art 2 students drew an egg on a paper bag with a particular light source, because each student sat somewhere differently the artworks varied in composition.

Midterms!

Midterms has come early for the Art 2 and 3 students of Cardinal Mooney! These students will be drawing with graphite pencils from looking at a still life. For the Art 2 students they have to draw an egg on a paper bag with a specific light source, and this light source will cause numerous shadows reflecting from the paper bag making this exam very difficult. The Art 3 students still life consists of bones, a skull, and a particular light source creating harsh shadows. Both of these exams will be tough but these art students are all extremely talented and their exams will turn out excellent!

Blast From the Past!

Because our blog is new this year, some homage must be paid to the artists who have since graduated and left their legacy behind.  Though Mooney is a small school, the talent is immense!  Here are some highlights from the past few years, from incredibly talented graduated students!

And the winners are.......

A serious congratulations go out to all of the students that submitted artwork for the Scholastic Art Competition, your hard work never goes unnoticed.  You are all winners in my books for putting yourselves out there artistically!

I am so proud of you all and never stop creating!!!

There were quite a few winners at this year's competition, which is very exciting! :)

If you are not aware, the Scholastic Art Competition is a juried national competition for middle and high school students.  It's broken down into regions, and judged by highly qualified art instructors from art colleges.  CMC's region includes schools from: Huron, Lapeer, Macomb, Sanilac, and St. Clair counties.  Our art work is judged by the professors at College for Creative Studies in Detroit.  Because there are so many schools and so little space, not all work gets into the art show- so it's an honor just to be recognized!

The art is awarded in three different categories: Honorable Mention, Silver Key, and Gold Key.  An Honorable Mention is a recognition of great work, a Silver Key is recognized as well above average, and a Gold Key is top in show.  Gold Key pieces will be sent to New York and judged at a national level which could lead to Gold or Silver medals (like the Olympics!) or even a scholarship.

This year over 2400 pieces were judged and 570 works made it into the show!!! There were 121 Gold Keys, 176 Silver Keys, and 260 Honorable Mentions.

Cardinal Mooney students are so talented we received: two Gold Keys, nine Silver Keys, and six Honorable Mentions!!!!

There is an award ceremony at Macomb Community College's Center for Performing Arts on Monday, January 27.  The ceremony begins at 7 pm (student winners should arrive at 6:30 to sign in), and the exhibition opens at the Lorenzo Cultural Center following the awards and runs through February 11, 2014.
