This week is the final week for all senior students. They are finishing up their final work to be turned in on Friday. For Mrs. Lazar, this leaves her with nearly only Art 1 classes and very limited number of Art 2 students. Art one will finish the year working on self portraits and completing their final drawing exam. Art 2 is also working on portraits but with a more difficult medium, oil paint. As for the blog, this will be our final post for the 2015/2016 school year. CMC is excited for the coming art next year!

This past Saturday we were informed about the Congressional Art Show. CMC senior Katie Lensmeyer received third place with a photo from her concentration for AP Art. Speaking of AP Art, our hard-working students' portfolios are due this coming Friday, May 6th. They are all just about finished and are feeling very relieved to have some relaxation. Congratulations girls! We can't wait for results in July.

As the year is coming closer and closer to the end, art students are filling out forms for their final competition. This is our most local competition, the St. Clair Art Association Awards. In previous years we have done rather well, including numerous honorable mentions, pieces in the top three, and the 2012 cover award. Our fingers are crossed that an outcome returns as good as our previous competitions. We also, in the past week, received one award in the top ten pieces for the Congressional Art Show. We will not know the piece or placement until this coming Saturday.

The time is running short. Our three senior AP Art students are working very hard as their return date is approaching. On May 6th the students must digitally send in their concentration, pieces that they have been working on for this past school year that deal with one topic that they are passionate about, breadth, a collection of work over the years that displays talent and knowledge of art principles, and quality, five pieces that are the strongest of all their work that get mailed in to the readers. The students are very close to completing this and the stress will soon be gone.
Jordan Kelly - Jordan is working with the role of genders in society and making a statement about gender identity. Jordan is working largely with oil paint, marker, and photoshop for this concentration.

Faith Gwozdz

Faith Gwozdz - Faith is focusing on life and death cycle in the animal kingdom. She is a master of media and has been using oil paint, colored pencil, charcoal, and pastels for her work.

Katie Lensmeyer - She is working with the idea of being contained or trapped both literally and figuratively.  This is fueled by the current young generation that sadly experiences a lot of stress and depression causing them to feel closed in or contained in where/what they are. Katie works strictly with photography.

This is a very monumental moment in Cardinal Mooney history. Earlier this week Scholastics Art and Writing national awards were revealed and Mooney's very own Faith Gwozdz received a silver medal. This is a huge accomplishment for her and for the school. It is the first in Cardinal Mooney history. Only six students received awards in New York from our region. She will be granted a scholarship for her achievements as well as an actual silver medal. Congratulations Faith! We are so proud of you.

This week is just an update on our students!
Art 1- Our students are working very hard on charcoal. They have previously worked on graphite pencil still lives and are now transitioning into charcoal still lives of kitchen utensils. Some of them love it and some of them hate it. Despite the opinions, charcoal is a common and necessary part of basic art.
Art 2- These students have now begun working on their planar analysis paintings. They broke an image into shapes and made a value scale to paint the separations by color. This is the first these students have worked with oil paint. They are finding it not as scary as they imagined. Oil paint is very easy to cover mistakes.
Art 3- Our small but talented group of art 3 students are venturing into the idea of consumerism. It was completely a personal project, designed and created by only them. They were able to choose and do any subject as long as it fit under consumerism. It's interesting to see the statements that young people are making. These students are expanding their art vocabulary.

AP Art- And of course our AP students are working very hard on their portfolios. The date to turn in their work is soon approaching. Lets wish these seniors luck on finishing their extensive portfolio in the next two months.

We have not previously mentioned it, but Cardinal Mooney was fortunate enough to be offered an art dual enrollment opportunity on campus. Every saturday morning to afternoon Kendall College of Art and Design offers a Drawing 1 class at the school. We have nine very talented students who will be receiving general ed art credit in college for this class. The class was offered at a discounted rate and in exchange for dropping their normal day art class. They focus solely on still life drawing and many major principles of drawing. The class lasts for 6 hours and the students have their normal art periods in the week to work on their drawings. Next fall the Kendall class being offered will be 2D design. This class is not exclusive to art students but anyone with an interest in the class and receiving credit before the even step on a college campus.
